CWE-708 Base Incompleto

Incorrect Ownership Assignment

This vulnerability occurs when a system grants ownership of a resource to an entity that should not have that level of control, placing it outside the intended security boundary.

Definição

What is CWE-708?

This vulnerability occurs when a system grants ownership of a resource to an entity that should not have that level of control, placing it outside the intended security boundary.
Incorrect ownership assignment happens when an application or system mistakenly gives administrative or privileged control over a resource—like a file, data object, or system component—to a user, process, or entity that isn't part of the trusted group meant to manage it. This often stems from flawed permission logic, missing validation checks, or misconfigured access control lists (ACLs) during resource creation or user provisioning. As a result, actors outside the intended security sphere can perform unauthorized actions such as modifying, deleting, or exfiltrating the resource. This breaks the core security principle of least privilege and can lead to data breaches, privilege escalation, or system compromise, as untrusted entities gain influence over assets they shouldn't control.
Impacto no mundo real

Real-world CVEs caused by CWE-708

  • File system sets wrong ownership and group when creating a new file.

  • OS installs program with bin owner/group, allowing modification.

  • Manager does not properly restore ownership of a reusable resource when a user logs out, allowing privilege escalation.

  • Backup software restores symbolic links with incorrect uid/gid.

  • Product changes the ownership of files that a symlink points to, instead of the symlink itself.

  • Component assigns ownership of sensitive directory tree to a user account, which can be leveraged to perform privileged operations.

Como os atacantes a exploram

Trajeto do atacante passo a passo

  1. 1

// Example pattern — see MITRE for the canonical references.
function handleRequest(input) {
  // Untrusted input flows directly into the sensitive sink.
  return executeUnsafe(input);
}
Exemplo de código seguro

Secure pseudo

Seguro pseudo
// Validate, sanitize, or use a safe API before reaching the sink.
function handleRequest(input) {
  const safe = validateAndEscape(input);
  return executeWithGuards(safe);
}
What changed: the unsafe sink is replaced (or the input is validated/escaped) so the same payload no longer triggers the weakness.
Lista de verificação de prevenção

How to prevent CWE-708

  • Policy Periodically review the privileges and their owners.
  • Testing Use automated tools to check for privilege settings.
Sinais de deteção

How to detect CWE-708

SAST High

Perguntas frequentes

Frequently asked questions

O que é o CWE-708?

This vulnerability occurs when a system grants ownership of a resource to an entity that should not have that level of control, placing it outside the intended security boundary.

Qual a gravidade do CWE-708?

Periodically review the privileges and their owners. Use automated tools to check for privilege settings.
