CWE-1120 Class Incomplete

Excessive Code Complexity

This weakness occurs when software contains sections of code that are unnecessarily intricate, as measured by established complexity metrics like cyclomatic complexity or cognitive load scores.

Definition

What is CWE-1120?

This weakness occurs when software contains sections of code that are unnecessarily intricate, as measured by established complexity metrics like cyclomatic complexity or cognitive load scores.
Overly complex code creates a direct maintenance burden, obscuring logic and making it harder for developers to understand data flows and security controls. This lack of clarity slows down security reviews and vulnerability fixes, increasing the chance that critical flaws are missed or that new bugs are introduced during modifications. Complex code can also degrade performance, leading to resource exhaustion or timing issues. If an attacker can trigger these inefficient code paths, they may exploit the resulting slowdowns to cause denial-of-service conditions or bypass security mechanisms that depend on predictable execution times.

Verwundbar pseudo
// Example pattern — see MITRE for the canonical references.
function handleRequest(input) {
  // Untrusted input flows directly into the sensitive sink.
  return executeUnsafe(input);
}
Sicheres Codebeispiel

Secure pseudo

Sicher pseudo
// Validate, sanitize, or use a safe API before reaching the sink.
function handleRequest(input) {
  const safe = validateAndEscape(input);
  return executeWithGuards(safe);
}
What changed: the unsafe sink is replaced (or the input is validated/escaped) so the same payload no longer triggers the weakness.
Präventions-Checkliste

How to prevent CWE-1120

  • Architecture Use safe-by-default frameworks and APIs that prevent the unsafe pattern from being expressible.
  • Implementation Validate input at trust boundaries; use allowlists, not denylists.
  • Implementation Apply the principle of least privilege to credentials, file paths, and runtime permissions.
  • Testing Cover this weakness in CI: SAST rules + targeted unit tests for the data flow.
  • Operation Monitor logs for the runtime signals listed in the next section.
Erkennungssignale

How to detect CWE-1120

SAST High

Frequently asked questions

Was ist CWE-1120?

This weakness occurs when software contains sections of code that are unnecessarily intricate, as measured by established complexity metrics like cyclomatic complexity or cognitive load scores.

Use safe-by-default frameworks, validate untrusted input at trust boundaries, and apply the principle of least privilege. Cover the data-flow signature in CI with SAST.
